Watch NASA's Curiosity rover touch down on Mars, live at 1:30AM EDT

Watch NASA's Curiosity rover touch down on Mars, Live at 1:30 AM ES

You watched the launch, bit your nails over computer simulations and even played the game, and it all comes down to today: NASA's Curiosity rover is about to land on Mars. The $2.5 billion vehicle has been en route to the red planet for eight months, and in a few short hours will spend seven terrifying minutes blindly making its way to the Martian surface -- only to make NASA scientists wait another full seven before reporting on its success or failure. The rover is flying solo.

That doesn't mean we can't be there in spirit, however: NASA TV will be broadcasting the event on Ustream, offering commentary from the minds behind the rover, as well as audio from mission control. The Curiosity Cam, which runs from 11:30PM until 2:00AM EDT and 3:30AM to 4:30AM EDT, will offer commentary from the scientists and engineers behind Curiosity, while a second feed (at NASA JPL Live, which runs from 11:30PM onward) will play audio from mission control. If all goes to plan, NASA will be able to share an image from Curiosity's navigation cameras, confirming its safe arrival on the Martian surface. Sounds like a hell of a show to us.

Read on to view the Curiosity Cam right here or check out the source links below to prep your evening (or early morning) viewing for yourself. Let us know your own thoughts on Curiosity's landing in the comments.

Update: Touchdown confirmed! The entire sequence went perfectly to plan, and rover Curiosity is now on the surface of Mars and sending telemetry data.

Update: NASA's press conference is now happening live.

Sudan and South Sudan strike oil exportation deal

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? South Sudan and Sudan said Saturday they struck a deal over the south's exportation of oil through Sudan's pipelines and the distribution of oil revenues, two major stumbling blocks for long-term peace between the countries that emerged from decades of war.

A disagreement over oil sharing prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in January. Oil also sparked a dangerous military confrontation between the two countries in April when South Sudan captured the disputed town of Heglig, which is responsible for more than half of Sudan's oil production.

South Sudan said in a statement Saturday they will pay $9.48 per barrel to use one of Sudan's pipelines. Sudan had demanded that the south should pay $36 per barrel, the statement said.

Mutrif Sidiq, the official spokesman for Sudan's delegation in the talks in Addis Ababa told The Associated Press from Khartoum, that there was an agreement on the transit fees for two different pipelines, one transporting crude for export and another that is light crude oil that goes through a refinery before going to the port. One fee agreed to was $9.48, and another was for about $11.

"The deal is accepted by both sides. Even though it falls below the expectations of both sides, it constitutes a middle ground," he said by telephone.

South Sudan said the agreement on the pipeline transportation fees will last for three and half years after which the countries may negotiate lower rates or South Sudan, which expects to have constructed a pipeline through Kenya, will stop using Sudan's pipeline.

A $3.028 billion payment will be made to Sudan by the south to compensate their neighbor for the loss of oil revenue following South Sudan's independence last year, according to South Sudan's statement. That amount is a one-off payment and compromises of a third of Sudan's financial gap resulting from the loss of South Sudan's oil revenue, it said.

Sidiq said Sudan's budget deficit reached $10.4 billion. He said it is now the turn of the international community to provide assistance, expected to be around $3.5 billion to Khartoum.

"The negotiations were very tough this round," said South Sudan's chief negotiator Pagan Amum at a press conference Saturday following his return to Juba, the capital.

Amum hailed the agreement as a victory for South Sudan and his negotiation team. "The government of South Sudan has succeeded to protect the resources of the people of South Sudan," he said.

Sudan and South Sudan are engaged in negotiations in Ethiopia hosted by the African Union over a host of issues, including the separation of their once-unified oil industry and the demarcation of the long, joint border. The negotiations have been led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki who said Saturday that the African Union has set the deadline for the end of all talks as Sept. 22. Mbeki said an African Union heads of state summit will deal with issue of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region.

Amum accused the international community of favoring Sudan at the negotiation table and during disputes between the two countries. He said the bias was most evident when Sudan began taking South Sudan's oil in lieu of unpaid transit fees from their pipelines.

"America, the U.K., all were silent. They were abetting the theft of Sudan," he said. "They (international community) were all telling us 'let it flow, let Sudan take it.' Because they don't want it to affect prices."

He also said that international pressure on the negotiations was based on desperation and the search for a "quick fix."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Juba Friday to discuss the progress of negotiations with President Salva Kiir. Clinton urged South Sudan and Sudan to reach a deal on oil as quickly as possible to resuscitate their flagging economies. She also called on South Sudan to soften its stance, urging an interim agreement on oil if a comprehensive deal could not be reached.

"A percentage of something is better than a percentage of nothing," said Clinton.

South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year after an independence vote as stipulated in a peace agreement that ended a more than two decades-long civil war in 2005, but the two sides never resolved the most contentious issues between them.

In January, South Sudan shut down its oil production after accusing Khartoum of stealing oil shipped through Sudanese pipelines for export. Sudan said it had taken the oil in lieu of transit payments for the use of its pipelines. The decision has cost both governments millions of dollars in revenue, further burdening their weak economies.

Because the south's oil travels through pipelines that run through Sudan, the decision cut off a major source of Khartoum's revenue has led to instability in that capital. But the move cost South Sudan as well. The landlocked nation derives 98 percent of its normal government budget from oil.

Sudan's Sidiq said more talks will be held after Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr, which conclude before the end of August, to discuss security arrangements and other border issues. He said the deal won't come into effect until security arrangements are in place.

In Kenya on Saturday, Clinton welcomed the oil agreement and said in a statement that it reflects "leadership and a new spirit of compromise on both sides."

"Now was the time to bring this impasse to a close, for the good of the people of South Sudan and their aspirations for a better future in the face of ongoing challenges. South Sudan's leaders have risen to the occasion," the statement said.

U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the countries on Saturday's agreement.

"This agreement opens the door to a future of greater prosperity for the people of both countries," he said in a statement released by the White House Saturday. "The United States will continue to support efforts to advance a lasting peace for the people of Sudan and South Sudan. I encourage the parties to build on the momentum created by these breakthroughs to resolve remaining border and security issues."

The U.N. Security Council had ordered the two sides to reach agreement by Aug. 2 on such outstanding items as oil revenue sharing, the demarcation of their shared border and the status of the contested region of Abyei, which is claimed by both sides.

As part of the 2005 agreement, Abyei was to hold a referendum in January 2011 to decide whether it stays with Khartoum or joins the newly independent South. But both countries disagreed on voter eligibility, and clashed militarily over the area, forcing some 100,000 residents to flee.

South Sudan has called for a new referendum for Abyei to be held before the end of this year. The referendum would be jointly run by the United Nations and African Union and allow anyone living in Abyei for "three continuous years immediately prior to January 9, 2005" to be allowed to vote.

The U.N. Security Council ordered the two sides to hammer out agreements following clashes in April .The May U.N. resolution threatens sanctions against both sides if they did not immediately resume talks and reach a final deal within three months.

Todd Gregory: Fox Enables Romney's Military Voting Falsehood

Fox News is helping Mitt Romney spread the false perception that the Obama campaign is trying to limit military voting in Ohio through a lawsuit that is actually intended to expand voting. This is part of a pattern in which Fox has consistently promoted misinformation that benefits the Romney campaign.

Previously, Fox twisted President Obama's "you didn't build that" comments, a misrepresentation that Romney echoed on the campaign trail and in several ads. Fox also distorted Obama's remark that the wealthy paid higher taxes under President Clinton and that "it worked," in terms of the country's economic success during the 1990s. The Romney campaign released an ad using the same distortion.

This time, Fox and Romney are spreading misinformation about a lawsuit that the Obama campaign filed last month seeking to allow all Ohio voters more time to cast their ballots, falsely suggesting that it actually seeks to restrict military voting.

Fox has aired multiple misleading segments on the lawsuit. Today,?Fox & Friends Sunday hosted Pete Hegseth, a member of Concerned Vets for Freedom (and a former GOP Senate candidate), to obscure that the lawsuit simply seeks to overturn Ohio Republicans' attempts to limit early voting for civilians. Hegseth claimed that the defenders of the Ohio law limiting early voting see it as being?"about allowing Ohio to give more opportunities to veterans."

That statement turns the intent of the Obama campaign lawsuit -- and the history of early voting in Ohio -- on its head.

The lawsuit filed by the Obama campaign clearly states what it seeks: "Plaintiffs bring this lawsuit to restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day."

The lawsuit uses the word "restore" because Ohio had expanded early voting after the 2004 election. Last year, the Republican-controlled legislature passed laws that eliminated voting during the three days prior to the election, except for military families and voters overseas.

Bloomberg News explained this clearly in a July 17 article:

The state's early-voting laws were enacted after the presidential election in 2004, when long lines and broken equipment forced voters to wait as long as seven hours to cast their ballots, according to an Obama campaign press statement released today.

[...]

The Republican-controlled legislature enacted two laws last year with provisions to move the deadline to the Friday before the election for all voters, then repealed one measure in May to halt a statewide referendum sought by Democrats, the Obama campaign alleged.

Fox's reporting on this subject has ranged from outright false to highly misleading -- all part of a solidifying routine in which it fuels misinformation from the Romney campaign.

    Chick-fil-A opponents stage same-sex kiss-in

On Wednesday hundreds of thousands of traditional marriage activists ate "mor chickin" to support Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. Today, it is same-sex marriage allies' turn.

Gay marriage supporters are putting a romantic spin on traditional sit-ins, organizing "kiss-ins" outside of Chick-fil-A restaurants from Dallas to New York City to celebrate National Same-Sex Kiss Day.

"Basically what you're going to get is a bunch of pretty normal, average, everyday people that just happen to be gay or lesbian give each other a kiss or a hug, hold each other's hand, and really show them that we stand up for what we believe," said Marci Alt, who is organizing a protest outside the Chick-fil-A in Decatur, Ga., about 20 miles from the company's Atlanta headquarters.

While the spark for this week's protests both for and against Chick-fil-A stemmed from comments the company's CEO, Dan Cathy, made supporting traditional marriage, the issues driving people to the streets go deeper than one executive's words.

"For me why it's so important is, I don't believe anybody should have the ability to say, I'm not a good Christian, or I'm Jewish, that I'm not a good Jew because I'm gay," said Alt, who has been with her wife for 12 years and has two daughters. The couple have invited Cathy over to dinner, where they "can share a respectful dialogue about our faith, work and families here in Georgia," said Alt, who says she'll even make chicken.

Many of the Chick-fil-A supporters who turned out for Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day told ABC News that they chose to eat chicken sandwiches on Wednesday to support Cathy's First Amendment rights to express his opinion on marriage.

Activists who are planning to turn out for Friday's kiss-off say it is not about speech, it's about action. Chick-fil-A and the non-profit foundation WinShape that it supports have donated millions to anti-gay groups such as the Marriage & Family Foundation, the Family Research Council and the National Institute of Marriage, all of which support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

"Yes, you're allowed to have your opinion, but when you start signing checks over to people who are against my community and trying to rip my family apart, I'm going to stand up," Alt said. The couple have also invited

Alt said she expects "hundreds, hopefully thousands" of people to show up for the Atlanta kiss-in. Other formal protests are planned in Dallas and New York City and hundreds of other informal kiss-ins are expected around the country.

"It is just a nice nonviolent demonstration of LGBT love," said Rome Frost, who is organizing a kiss-in outside of New York City's only Chick-fil-A location, at New York University. "It's to show how much support that we do have and how we can solve these kinds of problems in a very nonviolent and romantic way."

Frost said he expects between 150 and 200 people ? both gay and straight ? to show up for the New York City kiss-in, which starts at 8 P.M. ET.

Business Investment: Getting Funds to Expand Your Business ...

A business consultant can be most helpful when you are starting to look into equity finance. Equity finance is a way of raising capitol (funds) from external investors (other people outside the business) in return for a share of the business (profits earned by the business).

If the bank doesn?t want to give you a loan or you are unable to, or don?t want to, pay interest and your business is viable with the potential for high growth, then business assistance through equity finance is a good way to raise capital.

There are two types of business assistance through equity finance for privately owned businesses ? venture capitalists and business angels.

Venture capitalists provide money at all stages of a business while business angels fund start-ups and businesses in the early stages of trading.

Working out which approach is best for you depends on a range of factors including how much investment you require, how much potential return your business has and how many development opportunities your business offers.

The two types of equity investment on offer:

    1. Private equity finance

This is where investors fund your business in return for shares that are not listed on the stock exchange. Private equity investors are looking for businesses that can provide profits on their investments in the long term in return for the risk they run giving your business their own money.

    2. Debt finance

Financiers provide capital in return for being repaid at a later date. This kind of equity investment attracts interest. Banks fall into this category.

Banks can legally charge interest and set a date for the debt to be repaid. You will have to secure the loan against either your business or personal assets, which could be catastrophic if your business does not succeed and you are unable to pay back the money you owe to the bank.

Private investors don?t have these kinds of legal right so the only way they can get their money back is if your business makes enough profits to pay them back. They want to leave your company with more money in their pocket than when they entered the arrangement. Private investors tend to be more hands on and can often bring useful insights and expertise to your business.

Before you approach a private investor, ask yourself the following questions:

    • Why do you need this investment? Is it to expand the business or to develop a new product or to break into a new market?
    • How much money will your business need? Be careful not to underestimate your business needs
    • When do you need the funding? Do you want the money in installments or as a lump sum?
    • What is the right source of income for your business? Is a bank going to sort it out or is a private investor going to give your business the boost it needs?

Finally consider engaging a business consultant or business mentor to give you the necessary long-term view of your business so you can be sure that you choose the business investment that is best for you.

    Smart wireless power outlets

Smart wireless power outlets [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 2-Aug-2012

    Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

Soon there will be no need for special timers to switch lighting on and off or operate household appliances when the homeowner is absent. In future, all this can be done by means of a smartphone or PC, thanks to Internet-enabled wireless power outlets that support the new IPv6 Internet protocol. The smart socket was developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication Systems ESK in Munich in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern and the industrial partner embedded brains GmbH. "We have been able to connect the power outlets wirelessly using the IPv6 protocol," says ESK research engineer Gnter Hildebrandt. "All household appliances plugged in one of the sockets can be switched on and off remotely using an IPv6-compatible device such as a smartphone or laptop PC from anywhere."

The wireless power outlets are a component of the HexaBus home automation system that was developed by the ITWM as part of the mySmartGrid project (www.mysmartgrid.de). "The HexaBus components make the smart home of the future a reality. They enable household appliances to be controlled intelligently, thus optimizing or reducing electricity consumption. For example, the householder can start the washing machine during cheap-rate off-peak hours, or run the dishwasher when the photovoltaic panels on the roof are generating sufficient power," says industrial engineer Mathias Dalheimer of the ITWM, who leads the SmartGrid project and is its chief programmer.

Intelligent control and measurement of power consumption

In addition to the wireless power outlets, the HexaBus system employs a specially designed USB stick that plugs into any compatible, off-the-shelf router. The user enters the command to switch on an appliance via a standard web browser or an Android-compatible smartphone app. The router and stick then forward the data to the power outlet. This two-way communication function also allows the wireless power outlet to send data to the smartphone, informing the user how much power various appliances are consuming at any given time. Thus, the user can optimize their power consumption. "The combination of parallel control and measurement functions is an entirely novel feature that no other wireless power outlet has offered before," says Hildebrandt.

Because the HexaBus system is based on the IPv6 data communication protocol, a separate IP address is assigned to each power outlet, and thereby to each connected appliance, enabling them to be accessed directly. But how did the researchers go about integrating Internet functionality in the wireless power outlets and USB sticks? To do so, Hildebrandt and his team developed special protocol software and an extension to the Contiki operating system that enables it to handle the 6LoWpan (IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Network) communication protocol. Contiki is an open-source operating system for networked embedded devices such as the microcontrollers incorporated in wireless power outlets and USB sticks. A linked web browser protocol enables users to assign a separate name to each power outlet such as "washingmachine.basement".

    Guaranteed data security

Users have no need to worry about the security of their data all information is transmitted in encrypted form. To make this possible, the experts modified Contiki to enable it to operate with the AES-128 advanced encryption standard. Wireless control signals are transmitted in the 868-MHz frequency band. "This permits users to remotely control a widely distributed network of appliances. The distance between the power outlet and the router can be as high as 30 meters," explains Hildebrandt.

The HexaBus power outlets are ready for commercial application. Their manufacture has been entrusted to embedded brains GmbH, the industrial partner that was also responsible for the hardware development of the power outlets and USB sticks. Meanwhile, the researchers have a new idea up their sleeves: they want to enhance their system with multihop networking capability. By linking together a series of power outlets, the router will be able to pass messages from one to another, thus extending the range of the communication system a solution that could be of interest to businesses for their office buildings and industrial sites.
