9 teens reported missing as New Mexico investigates ranch for troubled youth

HILLSBORO, N.M. -- Authorities were searching Friday night for nine teenagers reported missing from a ranch for troubled youth despite an earlier statement from the facility's attorney that the boys were safe and being returned to their parents.

New Mexico State Police said they executed a search warrant at the Tierra Blanca High Country Youth Program as part of an investigation of abuse. But the teens between the ages of 13 and 17 weren't at the 30,000-acre compound in Sierra County and neither was program operator Scott Chandler.

Police said Children Youth and Families Department officials also went to the ranch to serve orders to Chandler to hand over the custody of the teens.

"At this time, Scott Chandler is a person if interest in this case," said Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez, a state police spokesman. "This is an active investigation and all leads are still being followed. At this point and time, State Police has not been able to confirm a location or the safety" of the teens.

Program operators had been ordered to send the kids back to their parents or surrender them to the state after staff members were accused of beating and shackling students.

Ranch attorney Pete Domenici Jr. said in a statement earlier Friday that the boys had been "on a previously scheduled activity away from the ranch for several days. They are safe and have already been picked up by their parents, or their parents are en route to pick them up."

Domenici accused the state of escalating the situation by failing to agree to an emergency hearing in a lawsuit the ranch filed earlier this week over what the suit contends was an improperly handled investigation.

"We attempted to avoid exactly this type of situation by requesting an emergency hearing," he said.

Several calls Friday night to Domenici about the status of the teens weren't immediately returned.

Officers at the high desert ranch about seven miles from the town of Hillsboro said that everything looked normal when they arrived. They said there were personal belongings and no indication anyone left in a hurry.

Gutierrez said police launched aircraft and off-road vehicles and called in help from local law enforcement agencies to search the ranch.

Last week, the Albuquerque Journal reported state authorities were investigating claims that teenage boys were beaten and forced to wear leg shackles and handcuffs for minor violations of rules at the unlicensed program.

The operators of the ranch, Scott and Collette Chandler, deny any children have been harmed. And they filed a lawsuit earlier this week accusing investigators of targeting the ranch for closure following a fatal car crash involving students.

The operators also claimed investigators have been illegally interviewing students and telling parents to pull their children from the program by Friday or face abuse charges. Their lawsuit said at least one family was contacted directly by Gov. Susana Martinez, a claim her office denies.

"The parents have been subject to verbal bullying and threats from representatives of CYFD for several days," Domenici said in a statement. "Late yesterday afternoon, the Tierra Blanca Ranch received notice of a custody hearing for four of the youths scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. No notice of today's efforts to take custody of the nine boys was provided. Instead of handling this matter in an orderly manner, CYFD chose to needlessly escalate the situation."

The Chandlers had traveled to Albuquerque on Thursday with two graduates of their program for a news conference to dispute the abuse allegations.

"I've never seen anyone beaten," said Kevin Finch, now a freshman at Western New Mexico University. "The accusations are downright lies."

Another graduate, Jon Cowen, said the program "turned my life around 180 degrees."

Chandler said Tierra Blanca has been operating for nearly 20 years. Its website promises a program for unmanageable kids that offers a balance of love, discipline and structure.

It is unclear how many such programs are operating in New Mexico or around the country, as many are unlicensed.

"That's the problem," said Varela, noting that the Tierra Blanca is the only such program in New Mexico of which state officials were aware.

He said the administration will push for legislation next year to regulate such programs so authorities know where any programs housing kids more than 60 days are operating and so officials are "able to go in and make sure that whatever youth are in there are safe."

Niger's economic growth to hit 7.5 percent in 2014 on oil

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Niger's economic growth will hit 7.5 percent in 2014 from a revised 5.9 percent this year on improved petroleum production at its Agadem oil field, the government said in a budget report seen on Monday.

The Sahel nation and the International Monetary Fund trimmed Niger's 3.6 trillion CFA franc economy from 6.2 percent growth this year due to security concerns weighing on its uranium mining sector and power outages.

An Islamist suicide attack on a uranium mine operated by France's Areva in the northern town of Arlit in May, shut down production for more than a month. Uranium accounts for more than 40 percent of exports from Niger, the world's fourth largest producer.

However, that Niger's economy will bounce back next year, the government said in the report seen by Reuters.

"Based on the assumptions in the 2014 budget, real rate of economic growth is projected at 7.5 percent," it said.

A $3.74 billion budget adopted for 2014, up 22 percent on the previous year, took into account improvement on oil production and a decrease in interest payments on debt for its share of the country's Zinder oil refinery, it said.

Niger owns a 40 percent stake in the 20,000 bpd capacity refinery, a joint venture with China National Petroleum Corporation.

Niger, which ranks bottom in the world in U.N. human development index, deployed some 680 troops to neighbouring Mali to fight the growing Islamist threat as part of a French-led military intervention.

Obama presenting Medal of Honor to Afghan war vet

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Army captain hailed for bravery during combat in Afghanistan in 2009 is adding the Medal of Honor to his list of military decorations.

President Barack Obama will bestow the nation's highest military honor on William D. Swenson on Tuesday. Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama will also attend the ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

The White House says Swenson is being recognized for courageous actions while he was an embedded trainer and mentor with the Afghan National Security Forces in Kunar Province in northeastern Afghanistan on Sept. 8, 2009.

Swenson retired from the military in February 2011. He has a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal and lives in Seattle.

Where are they now: Pride’s Ricardo Arona

NITEROI, Brazil -- Ricardo Arona was one of the best fighters in Pride history. He didn’t follow the big stars to the UFC after the Japanese promotion collapsed in 2007, and he hasn't been heard from much since.

Arona made his professional debut in 2000 at Rings with a victory over Andrei Kopylov. In that same year, he defeated Tito Ortiz and Jeff Monson to win the first of his three titles at ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championships.

Later that year, the Brazilian beat Jeremy Horn and lost to Fedor Emelianenko in a controversial decision loss, but signed a contract with Pride. "The Brazilian Tiger" made his debut one month after becoming Rings’ middleweight champion with a pair of wins over Jeremy Horn and Gustavo Machado in the same night, and UFC light heavyweight tournament winner Guy Mezger was his first victim in the Japanese promotion.

Arona won eight of his 12 fights in Pride, including victories over the like of Wanderlei Silva, Alistair Overeem, Dan Henderson and Kazushi Sakuraba. Inexplicably, he wasn’t one of the additions to the UFC roster after Zuffa bought Pride.

Six years have passed since Arona’s last fight in Pride, a knockout loss to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in April 2007, and he has fought only once since.

"When Pride was over I didn’t negotiate with the UFC," Arona told MMAFighting.com in Itacoatiara, a beautiful beach in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro. "I wanted to take some time off. I was fighting five times a year and needed some rest. When I decided to return, I injured my knee and everything has changed.

"I competed professionally since I was 15, and when I was 30 I needed to stop," he continued. "Pride was over and I decided to stop and look to the MMA market, to see where I’d fit. I fought again two years later, at Bitetti Combat, but I torn the ACL in the first round. I fought two more rounds, so it took me almost two years to heal."

Fans around the world ever wondered if he would ever fight again when he accepted to fight UFC veteran Martin Eastman at Bitetti Combat 4 in Rio de Janeiro, winning via decision.

It wasn’t the best performance of his career, but it was a great win considering he injured his knee in the first round, when his foot got stuck between the mat and the fence.

"I’ve fought 18 times in Japan and didn’t feel the pressure I’ve felt fighting in Rio de Janeiro," he said. "I’ve never fought in a cage before and I felt very comfortable there. Many fighters felt that change [after Pride], but I loved it. I felt at home inside the cage."

With an injured knee, Arona went to Las Vegas with his friend Rogerio "Minotouro" Nogueira, who was scheduled to fight Jason Brilz at UFC 114 in May 2010, to meet Dana White.

According to Arona, the UFC president told him to get one more win before they sign him, but it never happened. Three years have passed since that day, and he had the chance to fight again when he got offers from major promotions like Strikeforce, but he never accepted.

"When I decided to fight again, I started to train with my friend Paulo Filho, but I injured my other knee," he said. "I’ve tore the ligaments of my other knee and I will have to go on surgery again. I will do the surgery by the end of the year, so I will need to take some time off to be at 100 percent again. That’s the reason I’m not fighting yet. I have to heal everything to return."

Arona has only won one fight in seven years, but he still wants to compete against the best.

"UFC is the goal of every fighter, and that’s my goal," he said. "I don’t know if I’ll need one or two more fights to get there, but I’m not worried. UFC is the goal, and I will be ready to get there. The only chance I won’t fight again is if my body can’t do it anymore. But I had a knee surgery before and healed well, so I believe my other knee will be 100 percent. I know time flies, but I also believe in my experience. Everything will be alright.

"I’ve talked about it a lot in the past, so I decided I won’t fix a deadline for my return because I need to be solid in every aspect of the fight to return, and I still have that knee surgery to do," he continued. "I believe my recovery will take a year and I should be able at least to decide what’s next at the end of 2014. Will I return fighting jiu-jitsu, submission or straight to MMA? I expect to be ready to fight in one year after the surgery, but if it takes more than a year I’m okay with that too. No rush. I need to get ready to return at 100 percent and that’s what matters."

But a fighter needs money, and having only a single fight in six years doesn't afford a house in Itacoatiara.

"Every athlete lives with the money they get from sponsors and purses," Arona said, "and I haven’t competed recently, but I have Quiksilver and Moskova as sponsors and they support me a lot."

"The Brazilian Tiger" is slowly building his gym in his own house, and he expects to be surrounded by the best teammates when it’s finally finished.

"I like to teach and watch people learning and growing as fighters, but I’m extremely competitive," he said. "I’m building a structure where I can train and get ready to compete. I want to have at my house everything a fighter needs to be able to compete at the highest level without leaving Itacoatiara. I have everything I need here. I live in peace, thinking about my projects. I can stay healthy using the nature, like the mountains and the sea. It would be tougher to do it in the city, and that’s why I love to live here."

"I’ll build a structure with all the equipment I need, but I will also have the best sparring," he continued. "I have a lot of good guys to help me here, but I also want my friends to help me, like Anderson Silva, Rodrigo 'Minotauro', Amaury Bitetti, Rogerio 'Minotouro', Paulo Filho and many others. I will also go to Rio de Janeiro to train with them, but I don’t want to need to go there to train like I needed in the past."

Arona looks slimmer today, but he still weighs the same he used to when he competed in Japan.

"My weight is the same for 10 years," he said. "I weigh 205 pounds and have always weighted that. I always weighed around 209 pounds on fight night while my opponents were at 220, 225 pounds. I believe that the fighters should weigh in on the same day of the fight. Weighing in the day before is ridiculous. That’s not your real weight. You’re a big coward if you need to lose 25 pounds to fight. If you’re really good, there’s no weight. You need to fight at your real weight class."

Arona will be a 36-year old fighter when he finally recovers from his knee injury (projected to be at some point in 2015), but he believes he will be ready to beat anyone in the UFC -- and that includes Jon Jones.

"Jon Jones is reigning in this division, but his last fight was really close," Arona said. "People have trouble dealing with his height and reach, his style, but he’s not unbeatable. You just need to be smart.

"We all saw after his last fight that he’s not that monster that everybody believed he was," he continued. "When I fought Alistair Overeem, he was a monster as big as Jones and I used the right strategy to win. You need the right strategy to beat Jon Jones. Glover Teixeira is an aggressive fighter standing, but he can’t let Jon Jones fight his game.

"I’m capable of beating any fighter. I’ve proven it already. I only need to be 100 percent to do it. Today, I can’t beat any of them. That’s the reality. But I believe a lot in myself. I’ve fought fighter from every weight class. Doing the right thing, I have a chance against any of them. Most of the fighters today (in the UFC) lose because they make mistakes, not because the other one if better than them."

Before driving back home in his car, a mid-1990’s silver BMW, the Pride veteran asks to send a message to his fans around the world, He wants to remind them that Ricardo Arona will fight again.

"I’m doing everything I need to return to the ring and do my best again," Arona said. "I know I’m the type of fighter that the market needs, and I need this time to get ready to go to war again."

Microsoft Surface for Windows RT tablet coming October 26th for $199?

We'll admit to being a little blown away when Microsoft launched the Surface -- it was an impressively polished tablet that we had heard barely a whisper of leading up to the mysterious launch event. But, there was one thing that we were still left wondering: how much would it cost? Now, with Acer getting all in a huff about competition and Microsoft conceding that some OEMs might be a little upset when this thing ships, we might just have an idea for you. According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th -- no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.

That MRSP, almost certainly lower than Microsoft's own cost, would line it up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way and give a lot of people a lot of reason to try out an operating system that is going to feel rather different than previous incarnations. The question is: will it drive enough sales of media and apps for Microsoft to recoup its loss? Or, will companies like Acer put up enough of a fight in the months between now and October to keep Microsoft from undercutting its own partners? We'll find out soon, dear readers.

Is your morning coffee an ok option on your healthy eating plan?? If coffee really bad for you or is it actually good?

I get these questions about coffee and health all the time and as a coffee drinker myself, it is smart to take a look at both the good and the bad.

Now, I'm not here to tell you that coffee is good for you. If I did, I would be telling only the good side of the story and I'm no politician. I am here to give you the good and the bad and tell you how you can incorporate your favorite coffee or tea into your healthy meal plan.

The Ugly Side of Caffeine

Most coffee and tea contains a lot of caffeine. This is usually the primary reason people make coffee their drink of choice in the morning. Caffeine is a drug like any other and comes with a long list of side effects. Have you ever tried not having your coffee in the morning? Yeah, pass the Excedrin, right? The headache that comes on when you try and kick this habit can be brutal (just like with other drugs) and creating a dependency and addiction like this is harmful to the body.

Second, coffee is extremely acidic. Our bodies function at optimum levels when they are slightly more alkaline (the opposite of acidic). It is best for us to greatly reduce any foods that will drive our body's pH to be more acidic and eat more foods that are alkaline (like fruits and veggies). An acidic body pH is like a magnet for all kinds of illnesses. Also, an alkaline body has a much stronger immune system, making illness much less likely.

Last but not least, the caffeine in coffee and tea is abuse to your adrenal glands. Your adrenals release your "fight or flight" hormones basically giving you a nice "boost" when needed. Unfortunately, people who drink coffee all day long are consistently beating on their adrenals. This is the equivalent of whipping a tired horse even when he is exhausted. Eventually he will not move at all.

The Pretty Side of Caffeine

Coffee tastes oh so yummy and makes me feel great in the morning. (What? Is that not a good enough reason to drink it?)

Many studies have shown that coffee can help in the prevention and treatment of diseases and illnesses as varied as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, liver disease, skin cancer, Parkinsons's disease and more. Although, I don't believe coffee would be the cure all to any of these diseases, many ancient cultures did rely on the coffee bean to cure a long list of ailments. Not to mention, small doses of caffeine can increase performance and mental focus.

Green tea is also a great drink to include with a long list of benefits. If nothing else, green tea is a wonderful source of antioxidants which are important in cancer prevention. Green tea has even been found to raise metabolism and aid in fat burning. Before you go take a green tea bath, its effects are really minor when compared to the effects of sound nutrition and exercise plans. Now that I've said that, don't think you can eat junk food and just wash it down with green tea!

What is a coffee and tea drinker to do?

1. Limit your coffee and tea intake to 2 ? 8 oz cups per day. No, not 2 of each, 2 total. Any more than that is considered as a heavy addict. (I know. I've been there).

2. If you are currently dependent on a lot of caffeine each day, replace 1 or 2 cups of coffee with green tea instead. Green tea has much less caffeine than coffee and will help combat the ugly detox symptoms.

3. Do not jack up your coffee with sugar, milk, syrup and whip cream (So I guess that means no Starbucks, huh?). Use stevia or xylitol to sweeten and avoid all the empty, harmful calories. A teaspoon of half and half won't hurt either. Please oh please, do not use any of those flavored creamers. They are closer to someone's chemistry experiment than they are to real food.

4. Make sure to make your food choices healthy. Avoiding other acidic foods like sugar, artificial sweeteners and processed foods will lighten the acid load on the body.

5. Make sure the coffee you drink is organic. Conventional coffee is filled with pesticides and chemicals and should be avoided at all costs.

There is no need to give up your morning coffee but it is important to drink the right types of coffee, without the added unhealthy extras and, as with most things, in moderation.

Love Song Ideas

So I have been thinking, and I have always loved the thought of a I guess you can say themed romance. As in, the romance itself has a theme song or possibly even a few themes, if you want to make things interesting.
For example: Demolition Lovers by My Chemical Romance
The song is amazing, and tells a story of two lovers on the run. Now, everyone gets different ideas from music, but I think it would be interesting to try and make a rp based on songs. Possibly about the struggles between 3 couples and their interesting (and possible odd) pairing.

Now, this is a very loose idea and i would LOVE comments/thoughts/anything!!

NOTE: This post will be edited as I think of more things.
ALSO note that though it has it in the title and info, I am not only looking for love stories. I think some we could form a whole story off of a playlist of sort, and it doesn't have to be a love story.

Writing Contests: A Conversation with Vanessa Gebbie ? Flash ...

Vanessa Gebbie is a writer, tutor, teacher, and editor. She has participated in a number of writing contests, both as an author and as a judge. Vanessa offered to let Flash Fiction Chronicles pick her brain about writing contests, and we willingly picked up a pointed tool and accepted.

FFC: Vanessa, would you mind opening with a brief statement about the value to a writer of?entering writing contests?

VG: Hi there. I would say this, straight away ? If your work stands out for the right reasons in competitions, they can be very good for your writing career. I can only speak personally ? but the competition route to publication has served me well. Doing OK in meaningful contests allowed me to jump the frustrating stage of searching for an agent ? I was approached as a direct result of a series of successes, and therefore am rather grateful to the competition scene. So, you could say that they can be a fast track through the minefield.

But I would also say that writers need to be very very careful which competitions they target, especially if they are paying entry fees. There are hundreds, if not thousands of the things ? many of which are brilliant to have on the CV, if you succeed. Others, unfortunately, are not worth the entry fee, as no-one will care two figs if you won, except your mother. Which brings me to the next question, really?

FFC: Are there any pitfalls the author should be aware of?

VG: Yes ? every man and his cat is calling themselves a prizewinning writer these days, it seems. Sorry, and all that, but it is true ? all you have to do is set up a competition with a few mates, accept some entries, get said mates to judge it, and of course, your work will be the best, so you win. Zap. You are a prizewinning writer. But are you, really, hand on heart? That is a hugely exaggerated scenario, of course, but you get my drift. No one would really organise a comp and get their mates to ? would they? Nah. I am assuming your readers would far rather have a meaningful win on their CV!

So the first pitfall is the minefield that is competitions themselves. My advice would be, if you are serious about this thing ? look carefully at who is organising them. Is it a respected competition? What sort of work has won in the past? Who has won? What are they doing now? Who is judging? Will it mean something or mean diddly-squat on the CV if you win or are placed?

The second pitfall is not understanding that competitions are lotteries, and you are playing a game of chance if you enter. Only do so if you can afford to lose that entry fee.

The third pitfall is to assume the judge will respond more favourably to work that mirrors their own, in some way, and writing something similar to their work. Honestly, after ploughing through a pile of read-alikes, any judge will leap on something with its own confident voice and delivery.

The fourth pitfall is not taking notice of all the rules and guidelines. A maximum word count is a maximum word count. Don?t assume the judge ?won?t mind if I go over by 100 words, 50 words, 25 words as this story is just SO good and they won?t notice? ? because chances are, those that go over the top will be thrown out straight away by the administrators, especially in the big competition ? and they won?t even get to the readers, let alone the judges. It?s purely a numbers game.

The fifth, and last for now, is the pitfall of not checking and revising the work. Sending something in that has just been written, without letting it rest for a while. Sure, it may be wonderful, genius stuff ? but best be absolutely sure ? give it some time!

FFC: Thanks. Now we?d like to ask a series of questions. The first three discuss the writing side of the contest, and the last three look at the process from the judges view point. I hope you don?t mind us probing into both parts of your brain.

From the writer?s side of a contest:

FFC: In general, writers spend too little time choosing a story/theme when entering a contest. Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

VG: I disagree with the statement, because the writer I am doesn?t understand it. In all the cases where my work has done well, it was work that was not deliberately chosen at all. It was simply a piece of work that was original, a ?different? story well-told, with a strong distinct voice. It would be the best thing I had in the files, and so I sent it in. Themed contests wouldn?t really have appealed to me ? a few words as a starter,? as below, that?s different.

FFC: What is your process before you begin writing when responding to a contest prompt? Let me give you and example. Prompt: Your character loses something.

VG: OK, I would try not to think, not to plan. Just let something happen on the page. So ? I?m thinking as I type this answer.

Someone loses something. Right ? what interests me is not the usual take on ?losing something? ? I?d try to move sideways, laterally, away from the obvious, until my characters start losing something more original. Memory, maybe, only thats a bit of a cliche. Losing the past. Losing face. Losing the ability to see the colour red. Losing their wife in little pieces (I?ve written that one). Losing bits of themselves?

?Eddie found it on the floor by the bed. The thumb off his right hand. Jeez ? how did that happen? ? That?s the sort of starter that would interest me enough to continue writing Eddie?s story?and I would be able to bet that there won?t be a hundred similar stories in the pile?

FFC: Haha. I believe that?s a safe bet. What do you do after you?ve written a contest entry and before you send it out?

VG: Wait. Try to gain some distance, and write other things. Then edit, word by word, line by line. Check to see it is as perfect as I can get it, without killing the freshness of the voice. Check the prose again. Check that those last words of sentences, paragraphs are strong words, as opposed to throw-aways.

Print it out a few times, in different font sizes, with different headers ? so the story falls out slightly differently on the page, physically. Learn from what I see. Try to gain the same effect as the one I like best, within the guidelines of the competition.

Where possible, get it into the competition in plenty of time. NOT wait until the last few days ?just in case I need to tweak it.? If readers start reading early, they will be fresh. If you wait until the mad rush of last minute entries, your work will end up in a tired reader?s work pile?

From the judge?s side of a contest:

FC: The few times I?ve judged a writing contest, I found in the first round it were the weaknesses that stood out. What weaknesses do you notice during the first round?

VG: Depends on the competition, and on the general level of the writers. But here?s a few random complaints(!)

• Boring writing/story.
• Overwriting.
• Underwriting.
• Poor prose in general.
• Unoriginal story.
• Little subtext, when subtext is necessary.
• Undeveloped characters.
• Stereotypical characters.
• Copycat work.
• Writer treating reader like an idiot i ? footnotes explaining unusual words, etc.
• Writer treating reader like an idiot ii ? repeating information just in case I didn?t get it first time round.
• Writer treating reader like an idiot iii ? starting with a quasi-literary opener, descending into something meaningless about girlfriends and boyfriends. ie, making reader think it is one sort of story, and switching to another.
• Infodump dialogue.
• Undifferentiated dialogue.
• Big bang opener, not followed by anything interesting.
• Anecdote, as opposed to story.
• Flat or non-existent ending.
• Exposition/drama out of balance.
• The writer writing round the interesting issue, and failing to ?go there? after leading the reader to think they are going to end up in a fascinating but difficult scene.
• Inappropriate language ( I don?t mean swearing! ? I mean giving an ill-educated character with Alzheimers the vocabulary of an Oxford professor of linguistics?).
• etc.
• etc.
• etc.

FFC: What do you consider the strengths of a story?

VG: The opposite of the above list! Among other things.

FFC: What makes a story standout above the rest?

VG: Voice. Character. And what the story is really ?about?, as opposed to what it seems to be about.

FFC: Any final comments you?d like to share?

VG: Yes. The above are the views of one person ? ask anyone else and they may well say I?m nuts.? But there?s some sensible advice in there, hidden in the rubbish!

Citigroup tries another housing tack: own to rent

Citigroup is trying something new to keep struggling homeowners out of foreclosure: turn them into renters.

CitiMortgage is painting its new program as a way to help homeowners stuck in houses they can't afford.

The bank won't manage the program. It is handing the reigns to an investment firm that bought a $158 million mortgage portfolio from Citi.

Carrington Capital Management and its sister mortgage company will comb the portfolio for eligible homeowners who are at least four months past due. Homeowners would transfer ownership to Carrington and another firm, Oaktree Capital Management. Carrington would then negotiate with the homeowners-turned-renters for "a manageable monthly payment" and how long the lease should last.

Carrington says the pilot program will help about 500 homeowners Arizona, California, Texas, Florida, Nevada and Georgia.

Summer fun at St. John?s Church

Many people remember vacation Bible school as one of the highlights of childhood summers.

?I have great memories of the picnics, the games outside, of being with the other kids. It?s part of the summer routine,? said Joel Haberstock, program facilitator at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Vernon. ?I moved here but I know there has been vacation Bible school at the church for many years and many people in the area must have fond memories of it.?

This year?s vacation Bible school with the theme, Sky: Everything is Possible with God, takes place Aug. 13-17. The two sessions, one for pre-schoolers and one for Kindergarten to Grade 5, run from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the church. There will be games, crafts, including airplane construction, ?wild blue? Bible adventures and lots of music, with each child getting a CD of the music to take home at the end.

?Chatter the chipmunk will be back, he?s a character kids will remember from past years. They always enjoy Chatter,? said Haberstock. ?This is open to the community and a great chance for kids to get active in a positive setting.?

Levi Johnston "Disgusted" With Bristol Palin Reality Show, Seeking Full Custody of Tripp

Levi Johnston is apparently one of the 19 people who have seen Bristol Palin's new reality show, in which she lets their three-year-old son Tripp run amok.

Johnston, who is about to be a dad for the second time with Sunny Oglesby, is appalled at seeing his son talk back, curse, and show no respect to elders.

Thus, he's decided to take action and seek full custody. Seriously.

Remember when this happened? Hilarious.

For the 99.99999 percent of you who haven't seen it, Bristol has had her hands full parenting. See Tripp's f-bomb / gay slur for one classic example.

During that episode, Bristol Palin admits, "I'm doing a terrible job disciplining Tripp." Her former fiance apparently agrees, and wants custody NOW.

Levi claims he is totally "disgusted" by his son's language and behavior and feels his son is on a "downward spiral" and getting "no real parenting."

Levi tells TMZ that Tripp "deserves a better family" than what Bristol and the rest of the Palins are providing, and that "I love my son more than anything."

"I will do whatever it takes to make sure he is raised the right way."

Levi dropped by the courthouse in Wasilla, Alaska to pick up all the necessary paperwork to obtain full custody of Tripp; he plans to file it ASAP.

The two sides have traded many barbs in recent years, with Levi claiming the Palins cut him off from Tripp and Bristol calling him a deadbeat dad.

University of Texas at Austin alumnus Jay S. Lefevers has written his compelling memoir ?titled ?Cancer on the Brain? (Emerald Book Company. June, 2012). ?He will be signing books at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum, 10000 Research Blvd., in Austin, 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 6.

The book chronicles a rollercoaster five-year period of Lefevers? life, during which he coached a rough-and-tumble Little League All-Star team to victory, saw his appraisal company named to the ?Inc. 5000? list, and raised three children with his wife ? all while battling a brain tumor, surviving multiple operations, and then unexpectedly being diagnosed with lymphoma.

Lefevers ?grew up in Austin, attended Westlake High School, and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration ?from The ?University of Texas at Austin in 1984, and ?his Master of Business Administration in finance from Baylor University in 1986.

?More than anything else,? Lefevers said, ?my life-threatening health challenges taught me the absolute necessity of being your own strongest healthcare advocate. I hope ?Cancer on the Brain?

An inveterate entrepreneur, Lefevers has often invested in new businesses, and commercial buildings, and since 2010 has been an investor in Hollywood films such as 2011?s ?Another ?Happy Day? starring Ellen Barkin and Demi Moore.

Lefevers ?and his wife Lyn reside in Phoenix and have three college-age children: Briana, Adam, and Olivia. ??Cancer on the Brain? is his first book.

Watch NASA's Curiosity rover touch down on Mars, live at 1:30AM EDT

You watched the launch, bit your nails over computer simulations and even played the game, and it all comes down to today: NASA's Curiosity rover is about to land on Mars. The $2.5 billion vehicle has been en route to the red planet for eight months, and in a few short hours will spend seven terrifying minutes blindly making its way to the Martian surface -- only to make NASA scientists wait another full seven before reporting on its success or failure. The rover is flying solo.

That doesn't mean we can't be there in spirit, however: NASA TV will be broadcasting the event on Ustream, offering commentary from the minds behind the rover, as well as audio from mission control. The Curiosity Cam, which runs from 11:30PM until 2:00AM EDT and 3:30AM to 4:30AM EDT, will offer commentary from the scientists and engineers behind Curiosity, while a second feed (at NASA JPL Live, which runs from 11:30PM onward) will play audio from mission control. If all goes to plan, NASA will be able to share an image from Curiosity's navigation cameras, confirming its safe arrival on the Martian surface. Sounds like a hell of a show to us.

Sudan and South Sudan strike oil exportation deal

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? South Sudan and Sudan said Saturday they struck a deal over the south's exportation of oil through Sudan's pipelines and the distribution of oil revenues, two major stumbling blocks for long-term peace between the countries that emerged from decades of war.

A disagreement over oil sharing prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in January. Oil also sparked a dangerous military confrontation between the two countries in April when South Sudan captured the disputed town of Heglig, which is responsible for more than half of Sudan's oil production.

South Sudan said in a statement Saturday they will pay $9.48 per barrel to use one of Sudan's pipelines. Sudan had demanded that the south should pay $36 per barrel, the statement said.

Mutrif Sidiq, the official spokesman for Sudan's delegation in the talks in Addis Ababa told The Associated Press from Khartoum, that there was an agreement on the transit fees for two different pipelines, one transporting crude for export and another that is light crude oil that goes through a refinery before going to the port. One fee agreed to was $9.48, and another was for about $11.

"The deal is accepted by both sides. Even though it falls below the expectations of both sides, it constitutes a middle ground," he said by telephone.

South Sudan said the agreement on the pipeline transportation fees will last for three and half years after which the countries may negotiate lower rates or South Sudan, which expects to have constructed a pipeline through Kenya, will stop using Sudan's pipeline.

A $3.028 billion payment will be made to Sudan by the south to compensate their neighbor for the loss of oil revenue following South Sudan's independence last year, according to South Sudan's statement. That amount is a one-off payment and compromises of a third of Sudan's financial gap resulting from the loss of South Sudan's oil revenue, it said.

Sidiq said Sudan's budget deficit reached $10.4 billion. He said it is now the turn of the international community to provide assistance, expected to be around $3.5 billion to Khartoum.

"The negotiations were very tough this round," said South Sudan's chief negotiator Pagan Amum at a press conference Saturday following his return to Juba, the capital.

Amum hailed the agreement as a victory for South Sudan and his negotiation team. "The government of South Sudan has succeeded to protect the resources of the people of South Sudan," he said.

Sudan and South Sudan are engaged in negotiations in Ethiopia hosted by the African Union over a host of issues, including the separation of their once-unified oil industry and the demarcation of the long, joint border. The negotiations have been led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki who said Saturday that the African Union has set the deadline for the end of all talks as Sept. 22. Mbeki said an African Union heads of state summit will deal with issue of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region.

Amum accused the international community of favoring Sudan at the negotiation table and during disputes between the two countries. He said the bias was most evident when Sudan began taking South Sudan's oil in lieu of unpaid transit fees from their pipelines.

"America, the U.K., all were silent. They were abetting the theft of Sudan," he said. "They (international community) were all telling us 'let it flow, let Sudan take it.' Because they don't want it to affect prices."

He also said that international pressure on the negotiations was based on desperation and the search for a "quick fix."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Juba Friday to discuss the progress of negotiations with President Salva Kiir. Clinton urged South Sudan and Sudan to reach a deal on oil as quickly as possible to resuscitate their flagging economies. She also called on South Sudan to soften its stance, urging an interim agreement on oil if a comprehensive deal could not be reached.

"A percentage of something is better than a percentage of nothing," said Clinton.

South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year after an independence vote as stipulated in a peace agreement that ended a more than two decades-long civil war in 2005, but the two sides never resolved the most contentious issues between them.

In January, South Sudan shut down its oil production after accusing Khartoum of stealing oil shipped through Sudanese pipelines for export. Sudan said it had taken the oil in lieu of transit payments for the use of its pipelines. The decision has cost both governments millions of dollars in revenue, further burdening their weak economies.

Because the south's oil travels through pipelines that run through Sudan, the decision cut off a major source of Khartoum's revenue has led to instability in that capital. But the move cost South Sudan as well. The landlocked nation derives 98 percent of its normal government budget from oil.

Sudan's Sidiq said more talks will be held after Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr, which conclude before the end of August, to discuss security arrangements and other border issues. He said the deal won't come into effect until security arrangements are in place.

In Kenya on Saturday, Clinton welcomed the oil agreement and said in a statement that it reflects "leadership and a new spirit of compromise on both sides."

"Now was the time to bring this impasse to a close, for the good of the people of South Sudan and their aspirations for a better future in the face of ongoing challenges. South Sudan's leaders have risen to the occasion," the statement said.

U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the countries on Saturday's agreement.

"This agreement opens the door to a future of greater prosperity for the people of both countries," he said in a statement released by the White House Saturday. "The United States will continue to support efforts to advance a lasting peace for the people of Sudan and South Sudan. I encourage the parties to build on the momentum created by these breakthroughs to resolve remaining border and security issues."

The U.N. Security Council had ordered the two sides to reach agreement by Aug. 2 on such outstanding items as oil revenue sharing, the demarcation of their shared border and the status of the contested region of Abyei, which is claimed by both sides.

As part of the 2005 agreement, Abyei was to hold a referendum in January 2011 to decide whether it stays with Khartoum or joins the newly independent South. But both countries disagreed on voter eligibility, and clashed militarily over the area, forcing some 100,000 residents to flee.

South Sudan has called for a new referendum for Abyei to be held before the end of this year. The referendum would be jointly run by the United Nations and African Union and allow anyone living in Abyei for "three continuous years immediately prior to January 9, 2005" to be allowed to vote.

The U.N. Security Council ordered the two sides to hammer out agreements following clashes in April .The May U.N. resolution threatens sanctions against both sides if they did not immediately resume talks and reach a final deal within three months.
