Beastly Things

Guido Brunetti of the Venetian Commissario di Polizia returns ? and we're glad to see him.

What a pleasure it is to greet Guido Brunetti, when the Venetian Commissario di Polizia returns as he does each spring, pretty much like clockwork for the last 21 years, as trusty as a daffodil ? or would be, that is, if the daffodil also consulted the "Meditations of?Marcus Aurelius" as if it were the?"I Ching." Brunetti is one of a worshipful company of sleuths that includes Grijpstra and de Gier, Martin Beck, Gervase Fen and Wimsey, Cadfael, Poirot, even Spenser ? each one a man comfortable in his own skin, complete with quirks, foibles, and all. These are protagonists who don't burden readers with their miseries, as some fictional detectives insist on doing. (Don't we all have plenty of our own?).
?
In Beastly Things,?Brunetti sets out to discover the identity of a murder victim who has been stabbed, mashed, and dumped into one of Venice's ever-handy canals. But, as in many of Leon's stories, the procedural is a stepping stone to bigger problems undermining the magic of Venice: venality and greed, flourishing as ever, and here in addition the horrors of the slaughterhouse. Brunetti's own small band of merry comrades at the station are back in form: the broody Inspector Vianello and the chic Signorina Elettra, who lights up the Vice-Questore's office and conducts computer searches of amorphous legality. And the two from the dark side: the opportunistic obstructionist Vice-Questore and his junkyard dog, Lieutenant Scarpa.

Leon's mood, like Vianello's, is broody, too, and distracted. The dead man's circumstances flutter along, as if attaining critical mass were not an issue; there is a strange dithering over the victim's enlarged neck and chest, known as Madelung's disease, an illness of which you will never, ever hear again. Paola, Brunetti's sharp-as-a-tack wife, introduces a potentially juicy side story ? an item about a colleague at her university who is a candidate for stealing rare materials from the library ? that is also allowed to gutter out.
?
What kicks up the dust is Brunetti learning that the victim moonlighted as an inspector at an abattoir. He and Vianello investigate the establishment and are undone by what they witness. This raises the opportunity for Leon to underscore our tangled relationship with meat eating and the kinds of nasty behavior the meat industry has gotten away with since long before Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." Yet here it is happening in Venice, a place that Leon has always made shimmer even at the lowest tide. If that isn't metaphorical enough, seaweed is snaking its way into the city's most secret waters, an appalling, heartbreaking neglect that bodes ill for the city's future.
???? ?
Then, into the malaise, come gladdening interventions: Paola with a lunch ? tagliatelle with scallops, calamari with peas,?crostada di fragile ? which, after all, is only civilized and not to be belabored. And Brunetti trying to visualize in his head the location of the water door from where the dead body was dumped, a geography of the mind in the city he loves. Following him through it feels as intimate as if we were looking into his underwear drawer. It is a wonderful thing that taking such a perspective can, through Leon's alchemy, feel positively uplifting.

Facebook shares set for stock market debut

Facebook via EPA

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rings the Nasdaq's opening bell from the company's HQ in Menlo Park, Calif.

By Roland Jones

Updated at 11:35 a.m. ET: Shares of Facebook began trading on the public markets Friday morning in one of the largest and most watched initial public offerings of stock of recent years.

Facebook?s shares jumped to?$43 in initial trading, up about 13 percent from an IPO price of $38.But the stock quickly gave back some of its initial jump and was lately trading below $39.

The opening trade was delayed. Facebook?s stock was originally due to begin trading at 11 a.m. ET, but was delayed by about 30 minutes as traders experienced problems with changing and canceling orders they had submitted to the Nasdaq, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Traders told CNBC that retail demand for the public stock offering was the highest ever for an IPO, with an expected retail component of 15 percent to 25 percent. Trading volume in Facebook exceeded 100 million shares in the first three minutes of the stock?s trading, the Journal said.

Earlier, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock market. Shares of Facebook are now trading on the Nasdaq market under the symbol ?FB.? (You can track the performance of Facebook?s stock price here).

Facebook went public after the close of trading Thursday at $38 a share, raising $16 billion in a landmark initial public offering that values the company at more than $100 billion.

Investment banks organizing the?stock offering set the price at the top end of the range of $34 to $38 per share estimated by Facebook in a regulatory filing earlier this week.

Related: Facebook founder Zuckerberg opens trading at Nasdaq

At $38 a share, the offering values the eight-year-old company at $104 billion, making its IPO the largest-ever stock market debut for an Internet company. It will raise more than?$16 billion for Facebook and selling shareholders, including?Zuckerberg, and ultimately could raise up to?$18.4 billion, assuming underwriters exercise their option for ?overallotments? to meet strong demand.

Zuckerberg updated his profile on Facebook Friday morning, listing his company on the Nasdaq market.

Facebook has enjoyed remarkably swift growth. In just eight years the company has gone from a college service founded in a Harvard dorm to the third-largest public offering of stock in U.S. history, after stock offerings from General Motors and Visa.

The sky-high valuation of Facebook puts it a bit ahead of Web veteran Amazon.com, which has more than 10 times Facebook's $3.7 billion in revenue. But Facebook is growing quickly and posted $1 billion in profits last year, more than Amazon's $631 million.

CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg rings the Nasdaq opening bell.

Individual investors have their first chance to buy shares of Facebook in the open market Friday. But analysts note that intense?interest in Facebook?s offering is likely to drive the price up sharply.

Buying shares of Facebook on their market debut ?is not a strategy for the faint of heart,??said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany, N.Y.

In an example of the type of pressure investors could face, LinkedIn, another social media company, went public almost exactly a year ago at $45 a share and closed at $94 on a volatile first day of trading that saw its shares top $122 at one point.

Related: Want a piece of Facebook? Here's what you need to know

That means investors lucky enough to get in at the offering price were able to book an immediate paper profit of more than 100 percent or?"flip" shares and cash in. Other investors paid as much as $122 a share for LinkedIn that day and were left with paper losses. (LinkedIn shares currently trade for about $105.)?

Facebook could easily see a similar first-day trajectory, but it is impossible to know. Online investors who place a general order for Facebook stock will get shares at whatever price happens to be prevailing at the moment.

?Is it a sound investment for a sensible portfolio? No,? said Johnson. ?Is it a worthwhile speculative investment? Sure, but you have to be fully prepared for something that could be a very emotional event. And I have the sense that [the IPO price] could be very overvalued.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Facebook will make its much-hyped debut on Wall Street Friday morning, and it's shaping up to be one of the largest IPOs ever, with analysts predicting the social network will be valued at more than $100 billion. TODAY's Savannah Guthrie takes a look at whether the stock will live up to the hype.

Surely if you could get a bigger penis this would lead to sexual satisfaction for both you and your partner. An increase in penis size would make you feel more confident not only in a your sex life but possibly in general!

Increasing your penis size is both a preoccupation as well as a major course for concern for around 50% of the male population. So it is no wonder that there is such an outpouring of adverts and emails on the internet advertising amazing and unequal-able results by using this extender or that pump.

Most of the products available today simply don't cause growth. That's because they all ignore one vital thing - your body! When I started using natural techniques which rely not on pumps or extenders but on the body to restart natural growth I started to gain. Ultimately my penis grew by nearly 4 inches. In this article I'm going to tell you exactly how and why my penis grew so you can copy my methods and get the same kind of growth that I experienced.

We all wish size didn't matter but it does. Woman require a large penis to pleasure them all the time. The penis is a very sensitive organ that sometimes chooses not to become erect to its fullest sometimes. This means that your current size is not present at all times during intercourse. With a larger penis though you could still satisfy any woman even if your penis is not at full potential.

Are you one of the many men who are interested in enlarging your penis? If you are then you've probably always wondered does it work is it possible? What is penis male enlargement fact and what is fiction? Well today I will answer those questions for you. I have significant experience in this area having studied it extensively and tried EVERY product on the market. I also managed to increase my size by over an inch using the only method I found that works.

When guys want to get a huge manhood they go straight to the pills pumps and crazy contraptions that don't work. Some of these things may give you minor short lived increases in size but the people that sell this junk would adore to make you suspect that one day you can break an incessant plateau of a centimeter. Unfortunately you never will expand at all from these things.

Kansas City Cheat Sheet on Residential Roofing Plans | The Online ...

Whether it?s a new house or a second-owned home that you plan to renovate, there?s no escaping the need for a roofing system that works. You need one for protection purposes.

This post shares a couple of practical Kansas City residential roofing tips for homeowners like you. Consider the following:

1. The Look. Try to imagine which type of roof will best match your home. If you?re out of ideas, study the style of your neighbors? roofs. When preserving the community footprint takes precedence, don?t despair. Oftentimes, you?re given a lot of leeway when it comes to choosing colors.

2. Your Funds. Generally, high-end metal roofs can burn a hole in your pocket. If you?d like to control your expenditure, consider more economical alternatives. Many homeowners prefer composition roofs because the shingles are relatively inexpensive and yet they offer the durability you need in your roofing system.

3. The Availability of the Material. Consider perennial styles like trusty asphalt shingles. If you go for roofs that are only in fashion this year and outdated the next, you will have a hard time securing replacements and recouping your investment.

4. Maintenance Requirements. Contractors roofing residential properties in Kansas City often lament that homeowners call for help only when a problem has erupted. To ease such incidences, opt for a low-maintenance roof. Pitched or sloped units can help to shed water from your system and minimize callbacks for water damage.

5. Local Installers. Abundant, low-maintenance, and high-quality materials (such as asphalt shingles) still won?t be able to serve their purpose well unless they are correctly installed. As such, ensure that there is a local expert who can install your roof.

Use these pointers when planning for your home improvement project. Should you require more guidance and recommendations, schedule an appointment with a trust-worth roofing company nearest you. You see, residential roofing Kansas City homes should be more than just a business. It should be a calling.

As your professional roofing contractor in Kansas City, ensures that your roof is installed correctly. We make it simple for you to put your roofing needs behind you. Please visit, MBRoofing.Com

Training the brain could help reduce pain

ScienceDaily (May 17, 2012) ? Training the brain to reduce pain could be a promising approach for treating phantom limb pain and complex regional pain syndrome, according to an internationally known neuroscience researcher speaking May 17 at the American Pain Society's Annual Scientific Meeting.

G. Lorimer Moseley, PhD, professor of clinical neurosciences at University of South Australia and Neuroscience Research Australia, and head of the Body in Mind research team, told the plenary session audience that the brain stores maps of the body that are integrated with neurological systems that survey, regulate, and protect the integrity of the body physically and psychologically. These cortical maps govern movement, sensation and perception, and there is growing evidence, according to Moseley, showing that disruptions of brain maps occur in people with chronic pain. The best evidence is from those with phantom limb pain and complex regional pain syndrome, but there is also data from chronic back pain.

Moseley's research is focused on the role of the brain and mind in chronic and complex pain disorders. Through collaborations with clinicians, scientists and patients, the Body in Mind team is exploring how the brain and its representation of the body change when pain persists, how the mind influences physiological regulation of the body, how the changes in the brain and mind can be normalized with treatment.

"We're learning that chronic pain is associated with disruption of brain maps of the body and of the space around the body. When the brain determines the location of a sensory event, it integrates the location of the event in the body with a map of space. Disruption of these processes might be contributing to the problem," said Moseley. He added that it is possible for the body to be unharmed but the brain will respond by causing pain because it misinterpreted a benign stimulus as an attack. "We want to gradually train the brain to stop trying to protect body tissue that doesn't need protecting."

Moseley said the brain can "rewire" itself, a process called neuroplasticity. Often painful stimuli triggered by a broken bone or other trauma cause the brain to rewire and, as a result, the damage signal is never switched off after the initial body trauma is resolved. The result: Chronic pain. So if the brain is capable of changing to cause persistent pain, can it be changed back to normal to alleviate pain?

"The brain is the focal point of the pain experience, but the plasticity phenomena can be harnessed to help alleviate pain," Moseley said.

He further stated that disrupted cortical body maps may contribute to the development or maintenance of chronic pain and, therefore, could be viable targets for treatment. One treatment approach involves targeting motor systems through a process Moseley calls graded motor imagery. It relies on using visual images to help the brain change its perceptions of the body after prolonged pain stimuli. "For someone with phantom limb pain, the brain's body map still includes the severed arm or leg, and without any real stimuli from the region, it continues to produce pain," Moseley explained.

He reported that studies with graded motor imagery have shown encouraging results in complex regional pain syndrome and in phantom limb pain.

"Our work shows that the complex neural connections in the brain not only are associated with chronic pain, they can be reconnected or manipulated through therapy that alters brain perceptions and produce pain relief," said Moseley.

Listening to Mike Evans about how God is calling our hearts towards Israel and the significance of this verse below, and how Corrie Ten Boom fits into all of this, a dear dear sister in Christ who is no longer with us, but whose legacy lives on, and how this brings to mind Oskar Schindler, and how God used this unlikely man, a German, to rescue sooo many Jews during the holocaust, against all odds. i LOVE to see how God can sway hearts, even the most unlikely ones, for His cause. God is SOOOOO GOOD!!! And He will do the same for each of us, and I pray He does. Father may it be so, in Jesus name, amen.

Sound Advice from Unlikely Sources: The Avengers and Credit Card ...

May 16th, 2012

| | |

avengers

Last Saturday, I went to see my first superhero movie ever. Yes, you read that right. I have never seen ?Superman,? ?Spiderman? or any other superhero film. But when my friend invited me to go see ?The Avengers,? I figured that there would not be a better superhero movie to start with; it?s chock- full of superheroes, like the Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America. The movie did not disappoint!

But not only is ?The Avengers? full of jaw-dropping special effects and hilarious one-liners, it?s also a great source of financial advice. (That?s what we do here, after all; seek financial advice from unlikely sources.) Here are a few ways to wage war on credit card debt, Avengers? style.

(Note: Contains spoilers!)

Don?t be afraid to ask for help.

The context: As soon as bad-guy Loki steals the Tesseract, a cube of pure energy with the power to destroy the Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D leader Nick Fury doesn?t hesitate to ask for help from the Avengers. He immediately realizes that the situation is over his head.

The lesson: You don?t have to battle debt alone. Don?t be too proud to ask for help.

How to do it: Some credit card issuers will be willing to lower your interest rate to help you pay off debt sooner. But you?ll never know if you don?t ask.

You can also ask your friends to keep you accountable. Love posting every life detail on Facebook? Skip Instagramming what you?re eating for lunch one day and instead update your status to something like ?I?m going to save $50 this month. Keep me accountable!?

Practice Self-Control

The context: Bruce Banner has an unfortunate problem: He turns into the mean, green, uncontrollable Hulk when he gets angry. But over time he?s learned to control his transformation and use his hulkish alter-ego to fight evil.

The lesson: Just as Bruce Banner learned to control his rage, one of the best ways to battle debt is to practice self-control in dealing with credit cards.

How to do it: If you know that credit cards tempt you to spend money that you don?t have, why not leave them at home and only carry a fixed amount of cash? Simple solutions like this are easy ways to control your spending.

Don?t wait until it?s almost too late.

The context: For most of the movie, the Avengers argue and deliberate over how to defeat Loki. It?s not until a close friend is killed that they began to work together as a team.

The lesson: Learn from the Avengers and do not wait until something devastating happens. Waiting until debt collectors start calling you about old credit card debt means it?s too late for your credit score.

How to do it: Use a tool like ReadyForZero to help you start hacking away at your credit card debt. They?ll give you a tailored plan to prioritize your debt. And help you plan your payments.

Make sacrifices.

The context: Iron Man ultimately comes to save the day for the Avengers and all of Manhattan, but he comes very close to sacrificing his own life to do so.

The lesson: Sometimes you?ll have to sacrifice in order to eliminate debt. It may not be pleasant, but battles, whether they be against evil super villains like Loki or credit card debt, are never pleasant.

How to do it: If you have accumulated a huge amount of debt, get rid of things you don?t absolutely need- like your cable TV subscription or that daily trip to Starbucks.

There are many obvious lessons we can learn from the Avengers, like how to be brave and selfless. However, if we look closer we can find financial lessons that can help us win our own war against debt. Now assemble and fight!

Advancements in pet chipping helps reunite pets and families ...

I immediately felt a pang of anxiety. And then one of confusion. Exactly what was I supposed to do with this information? It appeared on my smartphone because I recently got a new puppy and, while Riley was under the ether being spayed, the veterinarian?s assistant recommended inserting a chip for identification purposes.

My previous dog?s identification had consisted of a nylon collar and metal tag; the chip sounded Big Brother-ish, if not unnecessary. But the assistant assured me that ?everyone? does it these days, so that lost or stolen pets can be readily identified if brought to a shelter or veterinarian?s office. A scanning wand would be waved over my golden retriever?s back, her ID number would pop up, and we would be notified of her whereabouts.

Gazing into Riley?s molten brown eyes, the assistant said, ?Wouldn?t you want to be sure that she comes home?? I signed the paperwork immediately.

Unbeknown to me, along with the chip came a year?s free ?premium? membership from?HomeAgain, the largest provider of pet chips in the United States. By registering Riley with HomeAgain, I had unwittingly become one of 850,000 PetRescuers who receive regular electronic alerts about missing animals in their area.

While pet-chip technology has been around for nearly two decades, the industry has recently taken a commercial turn, spawning new ventures, including membership programs and social networking. What was once a simple process ? inject a tiny transponder the size of a grain of rice between a pet?s shoulder blades and pay a one-time registration fee ? has become a big business, with annual charges for benefits ranging from online distribution of customized lost-pet notices to discounted flights for missing pets found hundreds of miles away.

Gary MacPhee, the general manager of HomeAgain, which is a subsidiary of Merck & Company, said, ?We wanted pet owners to belong to our organization and we thought we could add value with our services.?

HomeAgain?s Web site features cautionary tales from pet owners (like the self-recriminating video, ?We Didn?t Even Know Gucci Was Gone,? about a missing miniature schnauzer) and alarming statistics: one out of three dogs and cats will be lost during its lifetime.

According to the?American Humane Association, last year more than seven million dogs and cats went missing; only about 17 percent of lost dogs and 2 percent of lost cats ever find their way back from shelters to their original owners. More than 10 million pets are euthanized every year because their owners can?t be found. HomeAgain?s Web site has a ticker counting pet recoveries tracked to chip technology; as of late April, it clocked 1,016,843 such reunions.

But not all pet owners are sold on chips. Mary Ellen Feeley of Riverside, Conn., agreed to have a chip inserted in her Labrador retriever, Maggie. When she recently added a golden retriever, Dusty, to her household, she opted out. ?I thought the chip was more of a scare tactic when we got Maggie,? she said. ?I have never heard of any of my friends relying on the chip to find their dog. The collar tag, as antiquated as it might be, seems like a reliable methodology.?

Indeed, most recoveries are still done by collar tag, said Tom Sharp, an?American Kennel Club?official. ?It?s more likely that your dog will wind up on your neighbor?s property than in the local animal shelter,? he said. ?But a chip is still the only way to permanently identify your dog as belonging to you.?

Since 1995, the kennel club has offered its own nonprofit chip service,?Companion Animal Recovery. Until 2005, the service had a partnership with HomeAgain, which produced the chips; when that contract expired, the two organizations parted ways. ?They wanted to increase their revenue through annual fees and add-ons, so we split up,? Mr. Sharp said.

Today the kennel-club service charges a one-time fee of $19.95, which enrolls a pet in its database for life (HomeAgain charges $39 for enrollment). Kennel club customers can also pay a one-time fee of $15 for lifetime membership in its lost-pet recovery program, which includes a 24-hour hot line. HomeAgain charges $17.99 a year for its package of benefits; its newest feature is an?iPhone?and?Android?app that lets users upload photos of lost pets and delivers alerts with a bark or meow.

Some pet owners find the alerts distressing, and confess to not opening them or to unsubscribing from them. Others shrug them off. ?I would rather get three e-mails a day about lost pets in my neighborhood than 20 e-mails from stores I rarely shop at,? said Mr. Sharp of the kennel club.

Mr. MacPhee acknowledges that not every HomeAgain customer appreciates such services; after the free first year, about half decline to renew the membership (the registration information remains active in the company?s database). But he anticipates increasing the PetRescuer network to three million people by 2013 ? partly by enrolling people who do not actually own pets. (They can submit their e-mail and ZIP code, and request to be notified about lost pets within a 5-, 10- or 25-mile radius of their home.) ?Early triage is the No. 1 thing that gets pets found,? he said. ?The distribution of information is really what helps find your animal.?

Yet some pet experts think the chips provide a false sense of security. Claudia Devita, a Fairfield County, Conn., breeder, urges clients to understand the system?s limitations. ?There is no quick cure to finding a lost dog, even with a chip,? she said. ?Your dog has to be lucky enough to be returned to a place that has a scanner to check the number on the chip and then a way of contacting you. The only foolproof way to keep your pet safe is with making sure the dog is either walked on a leash or kept inside a yard with a fence.?

Indeed, unreliable or incompatible scanner technology remains a nagging issue for chip providers. A chip is essentially a tiny transponder that uses radio frequency waves to transmit data, including registration and vendor contact information.

Each chip can be activated by a hand-held scanner, but competing companies use different frequencies to send signals. Several chip vendors now produce universal scanners, and give them to animal shelters at low cost or free, but there is no guarantee that a particular chip will be recognized.

?The government has not mandated that all pet organizations acquire universal scanners,? said Mr. Sharp of the American Kennel Club. ?So it?s still possible that a pet?s chip won?t be read properly if he turns up at a shelter.?

As for me, I can?t bring myself to delete or ignore the lost-pet alerts that pop up regularly on my smartphone. The latest one: ?Farrah is missing,? described a 4-year-old female cat, weighing 12 pounds, with a black-and-white tuxedo coat. Her mug shot was adorable, and the online map showed a little green marker with a tiny paw print near my neighborhood. I?m rooting for her safe return.

CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada ...

CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada

CIBC Rogers Mobile Payment

CIBC and Rogers Communications today ?announced an agreement to launch Canada?s first joint mobile payment solution, allowing Canadians to pay with their CIBC credit card at the checkout counter using their Rogers ?Near Field communications? (NFC) enabled smartphone. Beginning later this year, customers will be able to use this payment capability at merchants acrossCanadawhere contactless credit card payments are accepted.

?

This announcement represents the first time a bank and a wireless carrier have joined forces to offer a commercially available mobile payments solution to Canadians that leverages the secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabledRogerssmartphone. This new solution aligns to guidelines announced yesterday by the Canadian Bankers Association for mobile payments in Canada, as well as those developed by respected international associations such as the GSM Association (GSMA), the association of mobile operators and related companies dedicated to standardizing and supporting GSM technology.

?

Some of the key features of the new mobile payments solution include:

  • Full access to a client?s existing CIBC credit cards on their smartphone at no extra cost ? whether Visa or MasterCard ? this gives clients the opportunity to earn loyalty points on purchases as they do today.
  • Multiple layers of security ? Paying with your NFC-enabled smartphone will be as secure as using your credit card today. Clients will receive the same fraud protection they do with their contactless credit card, and secure encryption technology will add to the layers of security already in place on credit card purchases. Clients will also have the option to set additional password protection.
  • No ?stickers? on your phone ? this new payment capability will leverage the secure SIM card inside a mobile device for payments, meaning clients can manage their credit card credentials on a secure platform, and won?t need to worry about stickers attached to their phone.

This new CIBC mobile payments capability will be available on select BlackBerry smartphones on theRogerswireless network when the solution launches later this year, with additional device choices for clients available following launch.

MasterCard?s Mobile Payments Readiness Index ranksCanadaahead of theUnited Statesand second out of 34 countries.? A key finding emphasizes that partnerships among the key players in the mobile payments ecosystem ? financial institutions, payment networks, telcos, governments, technology providers ? are essential to accelerate the commercialization of mobile payments.

Today?s announcement builds on CIBC?s leadership position in delivering mobile innovations to clients. CIBC was the first bank in Canada to launch a mobile banking App in 2010, and more recently became the first bank in Canada to deliver an App that allows clients to trade stocks on their mobile device through the CIBC Mobile Brokerage App. The bank ?also offers the CIBC Home Advisor App, free to all Canadian homebuyers, giving them access to information about housing prices and other key neighbourhood data in an area they may be considering. CIBC was named ?Best in Mobile Banking? globally by Global Finance magazine in 2011.

In 2002,Rogerslaunched its GSM wireless network, and last year was the first carrier inCanadato launch LTE, bringing the largest and fastest network and a global wireless standard toCanada. Today?s announcement builds on this foundation of world-class networks,Rogershistory of innovation and mobile commerce expertise, specifically in the area of

?mobile proximity payments. Over the past six years,Rogershas worked with the GSM Association, including the ?Pay-buy-Mobile? initiative to get industry standard payment cards ? like MasterCard or Visa ? on industry standard GSM devices. In the past year, the GSM Association further namedRogersas one of many operators worldwide committed to SIM-based NFC solutions and services.

Dashlane 1.1

If I had to describe the new Dashlane 1.1 (free) password manager in a single word, I'd call it elegant. Dashlane handles the same essential tasks as other password managers, but with a better appearance and a minimum of user effort. It also boasts features you just won't find in the competition. At present it only supports Firefox and Chrome; Internet Explorer support is coming in "a few weeks."

Good Start
Right from the start, Dashlane makes an impression. Other password managers order you to create a strong master password for data encryption. Some of them will rate your password's strength. Dashlane offers a wizard that helps you devise a memorable but unguessable password. It uses a technique similar to one I wrote about recently, combining a memorable sentence with a memorable number.

During the install process you can import any passwords you may have stored in Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. Dashlane can also import passwords from LastPass 1.72 (free, 5 stars) and RoboForm Desktop 7 ($29.95 direct, 4 stars), as well as 1Password, Keepass, and Password Wallet.

At present, LastPass handles some unusual login configurations that Dashlane doesn't, so when I imported my over-200 LastPass passwords some of them didn't come through. Those that did worked perfectly.

After installation Dashlane invites the user to enter contact, address, and credit card information. RoboForm, LastPass, Kaspersky Password Manager 4 ($24.95 direct, 4 stars) and others also store credit card data, but Dashlane does it with style. For each card you can specify the bank name and card color. When you're filling in credit card data on a Web form, you'll easily pick the right card by its color and bank logo.

Almost all password managers include the option to automatically log out after the computer is idle for a specified time, but often this feature isn't obvious. Dashlane makes it easy. By default it logs out after 30 minutes of inactivity. The first time it does so, it pops up and asks whether you want to keep that setting, change the timeout, or turn off automatic logout.

To Sync or Not To Sync?
Dashlane can operate as a standalone application on one single computer, or it can sync through your online account to make your data available on multiple Windows or Mac computers. The choice is yours, and you change your mind later if desired. In standalone mode it's similar to RoboForm Desktop 7; with syncing enabled Dashlane more closely resembles RoboForm Everywhere 7 ($19.95 direct, 4.5 stars).

Keeping all your sensitive data on your own PC seems intrinsically more secure than syncing through the cloud, but Dashlane goes to great lengths to ensure your synced data's safety. As with LastPass, it doesn't store your master password anywhere. If you forget the master password, you just have to start over.

When syncing with the cloud, Dashlane uses 256-bit AES encryption end to end. It derives an encryption key in part from the master password and in part from a device-specific key that's generated when you initially authorize Dashlane to run on that device. No unencrypted data leaves your system.

If you wish, you can limit what Dashlane syncs between computers. By default it syncs login credentials, personal data, and purchase history but doesn't sync credit card numbers and security codes.

A malicious or hacked website could conceivably host code that would simulate mouse clicks to trigger Dashlane's password or form filling abilities. According to a Dashlane whitepaper, the programmers headed off this kind of attack by using only C++ code in user-facing interactions, no Javascript at all. The paper concludes that a "large scale brute force attack" is impossible by either external hackers or a rogue employee.

EU airstrike on Somali pirates echoes US drone strategy

An airstrike on Somali pirate logistics by EU helicopters puts EU members on footing similar to that of the US, which has used drones and special forces to target Islamist militant group Al Shabab.?

By Mike Pflanz,?Correspondent / May 15, 2012

This morning's airstrike on Somali pirates by a European Union military helicopter brings the EU more?in line with US military methods in the country, but key differences in priorities remain.

The raid, launched from one of nine EU Naval Force warships patrolling off the Somali coast, wrecked five pirate attack boats and destroyed fuel supplies and a weapons cache, officials and witnesses said.?It follows a strengthening of the EU force?s mandate, approved two months ago, that now allows airstrikes on known pirate ?logistics? on the ground, not just at sea.?

Military commanders with the EU Naval Force, headquartered in Britain, took pains today to stress that the mission was conducted entirely from the air.??At no point did EU Naval Force ?boots? go ashore,? the force's press office said in a statement.?

France is the only European country known to have ever sent soldiers into Somalia,?despite the fact that far more Europeans have been kidnapped than Americans.?That one mission, to rescue a French yachting family, ended in tragedy when the boat?s skipper, Florent Lemacon, was killed in the crossfire.

The European reticence to put boots on the ground contrasts with the recently redefined, more assertive US approach to combating Somalia's combined challenges of piracy and growing radical Islamism.?

In January President Barack Obama ordered a small unit of elite Navy Seals deep into pirate territory in central Somalia to rescue Jessica Buchanan, an American aid worker, and her Danish colleague, Poul Thisted.?

It was the first time that Washington admitted that US ?boots? were ashore in Somalia, but defense sources and Somali eye witnesses have reported on several occasions in the past that American forces have carried out raids in the country.?This has always been denied by US government officials.?

Meanwhile, unmanned drones launched from a circle of US airbases, or airports in countries allied to Washington, have targeted ? often successfully ? agents of Al Shabab, Somalia?s Al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants.

'A dangerous game'

By bringing its fighting strategy more in line with that of the US, Europe is playing ?a very dangerous game," says Bronwyn Burton,??deputy director of the Michael S. Ansari Center at The Atlantic Council and an expert on Somalia.?

Pay Per Click Advertising Success - Strategies That Really Work ...

Remember that what works well for one business situation with developing more cupcake wrappers may not work successfully with your business. One of the most basic prerequisites for successful conversions is based on knowledge of those to whom you are selling. Understanding your market is perhaps one of the most important responsibilities you have toward your business. If you do this and execute well, then your conversions and effectiveness will increase substantially. There really are no two ways about this; you must take your cues from what is known and use it skillfully. That common understanding is the basis for your content being accepted by them and trusted. Many people that are into online advertising use pay per click advertising, or PPC for short. People that have researched this form of advertising have heard a number of horror stories. Everyone that does this type of advertising has to be careful - you can lose your money quite quickly! Anytime you want to succeed at anything, you need the knowledge to do so - PPC is no different. So if you have never read anything on the subject at all, it is probably a bad idea to do this. It should be very easy for anyone to do if they take the time to learn the mechanics of the system. Now let's take a look at some proven techniques (three of them in fact) on how to do pay per click advertising successfully. Always test out your marketing and advertising because this is the best way to get more profits out of them. This becomes even more urgent and critical when you want to run a PPC ad campaign. All of the best PPC platforms give you the ability to rotate your ads so that you can run the A/B split test on them. So that's already set up, you just have to use it. It is important to make sure that your headline is optimized before you run even one ad. Keep testing until you cannot produce better results. The second most important part of the ad is the body copy so run tests on these next. Newbies like to check their campaigns throughout the day, especially ones that they have just launched. It is possible to look at many aspects of the ad, but it usually comes down to the number of clicks. People like to see how much their ads are costing them as well. That is fine but really should only be confined to the first several days after a new campaign is launched. Being obsessive with your campaigns is not necessary. It is important that you gain experience, moving forward as you become more confident at this. Making unnecessary changes is one of the things you should avoid, and to do this, you should not obsess over your campaigns. Your campaign performance can be greatly diminished and adversely affected by doing so. We are confident many would like to take advantage of the full power of image consultant gold coast in their internet business; but you have to be careful and avoid proceeding with limited knowledge in your campaigns. If you have only heard about the above, then you definitely have to dig deeper if you want to use this and know how to use it with competence. If you have had your business for just a few months, you may not know all you need to know especially if your time is very limited. Our articles are designed to be an introduction, and of course we cannot go into great detail when presenting multiple methods or ideas in a single article. If you really take a very close look at all we talk about, you can spend a lot of time testing and exploring additional possibilities. You probably already know about the different strategies involved in writing headlines. For instance, you can create headlines that are a question. You can also write headlines that have been designed to hit nerves. There are also other kinds that make people extremely curious. You will start to see a huge difference in your click through rates once you start using different strategies in your PPC ad headlines. You can be quite creative with these and it should go without saying that you shouldn't forget to test your headlines. It might take you some time to get good at writing in different formats but it isn't difficult and it can help you raise your profits. When it comes to doing business online, PPC advertising is a tough place to be. Anyone with campaign experience understands how to make them profitable. But that is no reason to avoid it, and you can get around these things pretty easily, anyway. There are many teachers on the Internet that can show you how to do this the right way, but usually they're selling something. We understand very well that make up schools sydney is nothing new within the world of internet marketing and business. One of the most powerful behaviors you can have is maintaining an open mind as it pertains to marketing and advertising. Perhaps only one thing you just learned could be used in your marketing, and if that is the case then you should embrace it. This does not have to be a complicated process, and it just involves making a decision to test one of these methods out. If you do not have the funds to buy courses and ebooks, then one solution is to join marketing and online business forums and do some background reading. What you need to do is have a solid grasp on any method enough so you can at the very least test it in your business. Only you know what is best for your business, so just be sure you integrate it as smoothly as possible.

'Game Of Thrones' Has No Honor

Burning kids, breaking vows and snapping necks are the topics of conversation on this week's 'Thrones.'
By Josh Wigler

Alfie Allen in "Game of Thrones"
Photo: HBO

Is there such a thing as going too far on "Game of Thrones"? Just ask the charred toddler hanging on the walls of Winterfell — he'll have an answer, I'm sure.

Season two has already seen no fewer than four of its currently aired seven episodes conclude with the death of a child in increasingly brutal fashion. And "A Man Without Honor" — the 17th hour of the series — was perhaps the cruelest of the bunch, thanks to Theon Greyjoy. Not quite the boy-monster that Joffrey is, Theon is definitely giving him competition for the show's Most Loathsome Villain award. Even though the golden-haired demon child sat out of this week's outing entirely (ironic, given the title of the episode), Joffrey's presence hung heavily through Sansa and Cersei, both of whom are afraid of the boy king, but for very different reasons.

Oh, and did we mention that a certain little kingslayer made his ugly comeback this week? Learn all about that and more in the rest of our "Game of Thrones" recap.

Better to Be Cruel Than Weak
If Theon is truly lost, then he's finding his way back to himself through fire and blood, just like Dany. Unlike Dany, his version of "fire and blood" includes murdering innocent children to further his own agenda. Theon has very clearly lost it at this point. In addition to slaying kids who may or may not be Bran and Rickon (you know the rule of fiction, guys — unless you see a character die, they're never really dead), he's taken to physically harming every single person who opposes him. Poor Ser Rodrik was just the tip of the iceberg.

You Know Nothing, Jon Snow
North of Winterfell and well beyond the Wall, the crow Jon Snow and the wildling girl Ygritte are having themselves a grand old time. Well, not grand, but certainly sexually charged. It's funny to see someone speak in such a way to Jon. He's not the man of the Night's Watch he thinks he is, not in Ygritte's eyes; to her, he's just "a boy who's never been with a girl." She's not wrong, really. But all of that might change now that the roles have reversed and Jon's become Ygritte's captive. Also, fans of the books, were you as psyched as I was to hear Ygritte spit out her most famous line to Jon? We'll be hearing plenty more "you know nothings" as the season progresses, I bet.

The Lion King and the Wolf Girl
If the Emmys had a Best Onscreen Duo award, I'd make a strong case for Charles Dance and Maisie Williams. Their scenes as Tywin and Arya in the ruins of Harrenhal are swiftly becoming the best scenes of the season. Some out-of-context dialogue highlights: "This will be my last war, win or lose." "Do you think I'd be in this position if I'd lost a war?" "Careful now, girl. I enjoy you, but be careful." "You're too smart for your own good. Has anyone told you that?" Dance and Williams just clearly get a kick out of each other, and their chemistry is infectious. Great stuff.

Love Your Children
Down south in King's Landing, there's no sight of Joffrey Baratheon, yet the Lannister-in-stag's-clothing remains a hot topic for his surrounding court. Sansa Stark makes the bloody discovery that she's now able to bear Joff's children, a realization that she unsuccessfully tries to keep from Queen Cersei. Surprisingly, when giving Sansa advice, Cersei doesn't even really recommend that Sansa work towards falling in love with Joffrey some day — "You can try," she says skeptically, but her real advice is to "love no one but your children." She's having trouble listening to her own words, as Joffrey's continued cruelty pushes the Lannister matriarch further and further away from her son.

Uniquely Unfit for Constraint
In further Lannister news, "A Man Without Honor" saw the not-so-triumphant return of Jaime Lannister for the first time since the season premiere. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stole the show this episode, as he tends to do whenever he's onscreen. But I'm glad it's taken us this long to see him again — absence makes the heart grow fonder, even if a murderous prison escape makes it grow a little firmer in the end. Aside from seeing Jaime again, the Stark Camp story reached some other notable moments that should have fans of the books grinning: the furious introduction of Rickard Karstark, the developing creepiness of Roose Bolton, and the first mention of the MIA Barristan Selmy in what feels like ages. Yeah, remember that guy? Got a funny feeling we'll see that bold warrior again soon. ...

Undying Love
Finishing up all the way in Essos, we return to the plot point that's got my head spinning most: Qarth. So, Xaro Xhoan Daxos is in cahoots with the warlocks of the House of the Undying to kill the rest of the Thirteen and become the king of the greatest city that ever was or will be? And they took Dany's dragons, pretty much just to prove a point? Needless to say, these are more things that never happened in George R.R. Martin's novels. And once again, not sure what to think about all of these alterations, except that I think they're way too melodramatic for melodrama's sake. That said, while I'm not a fan of where the story's gone, there's no denying that Ian Hanmore is thoroughly disturbing as blue-lipped baldy Pyat Pree, and the potential for an incredibly unsettling House of the Undying scene is certainly there.
