Facebook for Windows: Desktop Application Launched With Chat and Ticker

Facebook has quietly released Messenger for Windows 7, letting users view their Ticker and list of online contacts in a separate desktop application.

The social network has figured that many of its users stay logged on through a browser all day, so it makes sense to offer a bespoke application that can be snapped to the side of user's desktops.

Facebook for Windows was initially a trial for a select few users, but now it is available for everyone here?(direct download link), although Facebook is yet to officially announce its availability.

Incorporating the Ticker and list of contacts into one small window means that users can see what's going on in their social world at a glance and without dedicating an entire browser to the site.

Like us on Facebook

The tiny application requires you to log in; you're then taken to a Facebook page explaining how Messenger for Windows works. The app requires you to stay logged in at all times, and you cannot be logged out from within the app; instead to log out you must go to Facebook.com in your browser.

It's a move that will feed the Facebook addicts with the social drugs they need, while offering the rest of us the opportunity to have a stripped-down and simple Facebook interface for when they don't care about our walls, photos and events.

Facebook for Windows offers very little functionality beyond Messenger. When hovering over or clicking on a news item in the Ticker a new browser window is opened. We'd like to see a small box open to the side, as it does on the main website's Ticker.

This also happens when notifications are clicked on and, annoyingly, if a message thread is clicked on a new browser window is opened instead of a chat window within the application.

One neat feature is a button in the bottom-right corner which snaps the application to the right-hand-side of your desktop.

Facebook for Windows is only available for Windows 7, leaving Vista users and any dinosaurs still on XP out in the cold.

Tech site ZDNet reports that Facebook may be introducing more applications for Windows in the future: "Facebook has hinted at a few upcoming features for the Windows flavour already: chatting with multiple friends, video calling, limiting chat availability, and editing settings. It's not clear if the company will be making announcements for every new version or if they will be just quietly released like this first version."

Pro-Huntsman group jabs at Romney in new ad

(AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman on Friday urged New Hampshire voters to stand up to the status quo and reject Mitt Romney, while a group of his supporters prepared a new television ad calling Romney a chameleon willing to do anything to get elected.

The $300,000 ad campaign is expected to begin running across New Hampshire this weekend, according to an adviser for the organization known as Our Destiny PAC. The adviser was not authorized to comment publicly.

"Two serious candidates remain," a voice says in the ad, which flashes images of Huntsman, the former Utah governor, and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and front-runner in New Hampshire. "One willing to say anything, be anything. One who can actually do the job."

It continues: "One state can stop the chameleon. Vote Jon Huntsman."

Huntsman, who served as ambassador to China in the Obama administration, has not been anywhere near that pointed in his criticism of Romney. Speaking to employees at a Portsmouth software company Friday, he said Romney would be unlikely to change the "trust deficit" in Washington given that Romney has "half of Congress supporting him."

"Who's going to want to change anything when you've got the status quo supporting you?" Huntsman said. "You can have a candidate who's going to fight for change who is not going to be in the hip pocket of special interest groups, or you're going to have the status quo choice."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also wouldn't do anything to restore trust in Washington, Huntsman said.

"Speaker Gingrich is not the kind of person who is going to be able to deal effectively with the trust issue because you can't deal effectively with the trust issue if you are a fixture of Washington, D.C., and have been for 40 years."

Huntsman, who is skipping Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, is betting his candidacy on a strong finish in New Hampshire's Jan. 10 Republican primary, which is open to independents as well as registered Republicans.

Huntsman entered the presidential contest with great expectations earlier in the year. But national polling suggests he's still largely unknown to many Republican voters. He's also struggled to raise enough money to pay for his own television advertising campaigns. On Wednesday, he told The Associated Press he's likely to leave the race unless he finishes in the top three in New Hampshire.

Pam Hicks, one of the software company workers, said she was 100 percent adamant before meeting Huntsman that she would not vote for him. After the event, Hicks said she was reconsidering although she doesn't like his anti-abortion views or his opposition to gay marriage, which is legal in New Hampshire.

"We believe nobody has the right to tell us how to live our lives," she said.

Still, Hicks said she planned to do more research on Huntsman.

"He needs a more serious look," she said.

Our Destiny PAC has now spent roughly $1.9 million on New Hampshire advertising to help Huntsman. That's more than any other outside group or other campaign has spent in the state, according to numbers obtained by The Associated Press.

Incredibly close with "Extremely Loud's" Max von Sydow (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? He speaks softly and sometimes strains to hear a question - but at the age of 82, Max von Sydow is still an imposing, even majestic figure. He's tall and upright, full of gravitas but with a twinkle in his eye; after all these years, he is still the face of the knight in "The Seventh Seal," and Jesus in "The Greatest Story Every Told" and Lassefar in "Pelle the Conqueror."

And now he is the Renter in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," Stephen Daldry's film drawn from the Jonathan Safran Foer novel about a young boy who embarks on a hunt across New York City to make sense of the tragedy of 9/11, in which his father was killed.

In the film, von Sydow is a mysterious man who doesn't speak, and who rents a room in the house of the grandmother to young Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn). The two become unlikely allies, in the process revealing some lost bits of family history.

While in town for recent screenings of the film, von Sydow sat down with TheWrap to talk about his new role.

It's surprising that despite your career, you only have one Oscar nomination.

Awards are important. They are very important, and it's wonderful if you get them. But when I get a project, I don't think, If I do that well, maybe I'll have an award for it. That's not what this is about.

But if you get something, it's great, because then maybe it means that you will reach more people. What is important, I think, is to reach as many people as you can, and do it as well as you can. Reach them, and inspire then, or amuse them, or maybe in some odd moments help them to discover something they hadn't thought of before.

How did you become involved in "Extremely Loud?"

Well, I have a good agent. She called and said, "Stephen Daldry wants you to be in his film." How wonderful, I admire him very much. A very interesting filmmaker. "Oh, and Tom Hanks will be in it, and Sandra Bullock." I had never met Tom Hanks, but I always liked what he did, and I was looking forward to working with him. Then I got the script and realized I had nothing to do with him. And I didn't meet him until the other day in New York.

But nevertheless, I got the script, and my wife and I read it together. We were totally touched by it, moved by the story. And there was no question. I said, "Yes, I have to do this."

Why?

It's a wonderful story about healing after this terrible tragedy. And I think it's a brilliant idea to let the boy sort of invent his own therapy. Which he sticks to fanatically. He is totally convinced that what he's doing will lead to some sort of an answer, some sort of a solution.

Is it limiting in certain ways and freeing in others to play a character who doesn't speak?

It's a new way of being that I hadn't done before. It was not, shall I say, more difficult than a normal speaking part. The only difference between the Renter and normal people is that he does not speak verbally, he speaks by his writing. But he speaks.

And it was very inspiring to work with young Thomas, who is really an unusually bright young man. Very, very impressive. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he's going to do in the future.

You keep working pretty steadily.

Not really. I really don't want to keep working, in general terms. But every now and then, if something very special shows up, why not?

Are you not driven to act anymore?

Not necessarily. I can live without it.

Was there a time when you couldn't?

I think there was, yes. I think I was a bit intoxicated by it. Now, I'm maybe a little bit more difficult to convince. What is important for me is to find something that I haven't done before. My problem is that in my early career I had parts in important films, of a special sort. I worked with the famous Ingmar Bergman, who apparently, probably from the point of view of casting directors, was very religious and very philosophical, etc. etc. Max von Sydow has played Jesus, so he's probably just as religious and philosophical also. So if we need a cleric, ask him. I don't know how many priests and how many bishops I've been offered. I've done a few, but most of the time reluctantly. Of course, there are interesting priests and bishops and saints and all this. But most of it is not that interesting.

And then, okay, I'm a foreigner. I'm not American, I'm not English. So they come and offer me the foreigner. Who is the foreigner in the story? The foreigner is most of the time the villain. And very often he's the Nazi. And then funnily enough, they also ask me to play Jewish refugees. So it's sort of two poles, in a sense.

Did you ever try to change Hollywood's vision of what you could do?

No. It's not up to me. What can I do? I don't think they read interviews with me when I say what I just told you. There are casting directors with lots of imagination, but also some with not as much imagination.

What was your experience like watching "Extremely Loud?"

Even if I miss a few scenes that there was no time for, apparently, I think it's a wonderful film. I really do. I was very moved by it. I think it's a very positive film, with the boy who invents his own healing process. It's a film of hope, to me. It's not a tragedy. It deals with a tragedy, but the film is not a tragedy.

Subpug RSS Reader Looks To Pull You Away From Google Reader

LayoutAs far as web sites go, there's only one site I look at more than Google Reader. You're on it right now. There's nothing technically "wrong" with Google Reader, but when you look at it every five minutes, every day of your life, another RSS reader option is super exciting. Enter Subpug. It's a new RSS reader that just launched on Christmas and it's pretty slick if I do say so myself. It's aimed toward more of the light news reader, rather than someone like myself with thousands of subscriptions. Still, it gets the job done. You can choose from certain pre-subscribed options like Gadgets, Music, Fashion, and even Geek Humor, or you can build your own/import your Google Reader OPML. The set up process takes all of three seconds and you're ready to read, mainly because there's no sign up or log in of any kind.

Microsoft enables Android and iOS users to experience Windows Phone 7... via the web

Still tempted by the fruit of another? If you're looking Microsoft's way, but aren't quite ready to toss your adoration for iOS or Android aside, the coders in Redmond are giving you an alternative to quitting cold turkey. By visiting http://aka.ms/wpdemo on one's iOS or Android browser, you'll be immediately tunneled into a emulation of Windows Phone 7. We gave it a test run here at Engadget HQ, and it seems that every tile and swipe save for Apps runs properly. Can't say the fonts and such looked as smooth on our Galaxy S II as they do on the Radar, but it's a solid effort that'll definitely serve you well if you're considering the switch. Just don't try to flip the demo horizontally -- that's clearly a no-no.

Senate Republicans ready tax-cut renewal proposal (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A federal worker pay freeze would be extended and new savings would be squeezed of out jobless benefits, food stamps and federal health care under a Senate Republican proposal to pay for renewing an expiring payroll tax cut, congressional sources said on Wednesday.

The sources said the proposal would be formally offered by Senate Republicans later in the day. Senate Democrats have an alternative proposal to extend and expand the payroll tax cut and cover the cost with a new tax on annual income of more than $1 million.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard Expecting Second Child

Couple have been together since 2002 and have a 5-year-old daughter together.

Actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and hubby Peter Sarsgaard are expanding their family. The couple is expecting their second child together next spring.

A rep for Gyllenhaal has confirmed to Usmagazine.com that the couple's daughter, 5-year-old Ramona, will soon have a baby brother or sister to keep her company. A source said that the actress will "be laying low for a little bit now." In a previous interview with the magazine, Gyllenhaal admitted it's not always easy to balance being an actress and being a mom. "I had been so focused on Ramona — and she's been everything to me — but I'm also an actress. It's not possible to do it perfectly," she said. "Being a mom is so present in my mind and my work. It's the most important thing about me, but next I'd like to play someone who's not a mother."

Life & Style reported that the couple told friends and family about the pregnancy over the Thanksgiving holiday. Gyllenhaal first had people wondering if she was expecting when she arrived at the Rome Film Festival sporting what appeared to be a baby bump in late October.

"Over Thanksgiving weekend, Maggie was telling friends that she's six months pregnant," a friend of the actress said. "Her bump is so big!" The friend added, "She's thrilled to be pregnant! She and Peter have wanted another child for a while. They're very happy that they'll have another baby in the house soon."

The couple, together since 2002, tied the knot in 2009 in Italy.

As for uncle Jake Gyllenhaal, the friend tells Life & Style that he's really excited to be an uncle again. "Jake is so happy that she's pregnant again because he loves kids. Maggie's said that he's the best uncle and has done a lot of sweet things for her first child."
